Tribals
Gonds who call
themselves 'Koytoria'
,the largest tribal
group in the state
in terms of
population .Though
Gonds can be found
almost in all the
districts of the
state , there are
two important
concentration
regions .The first
is the central
Madhya Pradesh and
the other region is
the southern part of
the Chhattisgarh
state - ie Bastar
Division.
More than 20 % of
the Gonds in
Chhattisgarh state
are in Bastar
district.In Bastar
the three main
subcastes of Gonds
are Maria , Muria ,
and Dorla.
The name Gond is
extracted from the
Telugu word 'Konda'
which means
hill.Agriculture,
collecting minor
forest produce
,forging metal goods
in cottage
industries ,
fishing,hunting,other
primary sector
activities are the
main activities of
Gonds. |
Abhuj Maria
Tribals
The Abhuj Maria
tribals are one of
the main Gonds
tribes.They live in
interior forest of
Narayanpur Tehsil of
Bastar districts.The
area in which they
inhabited is known
as Abhuj Maria
region which has
been spread over
1500 sq miles which
is a dense forest
area.
The Abhuj Marias are
hill Marias who are
virtually living in
isolation .They used
to dreaded by the
out siders since the
Abhuj Marias could
shoot down the
strangers with their
arrows.
Since they are
living in isolation,
keeping themselves
away from the touch
of the outerworld
and leading a savage
life , their
traditional culture
,moral living values
and social security
has not yet been
disturbed.They are
one of the rare
tribal groups of
India living in this
traditional way. |
Bison
Horn Maria Tribals
The Bison Horn Maria
tribals is another
type of Gonds
tribes.Their culture
and living ways is
almost similar to
Abhuj Marias.They
reside in the south
of Indravati river ,
Jagdalpur Tehsil.
The Bison Horn
Marias adorn the
bison horns during
their dancing
rituals.They collect
minor forest
produce.
The Bison Horn
Marias do not plough
the earth as it
would mean
inflicting pain on
her body.Pointed
wood pieces are used
for piercing earth
crust for
cultivation. |
Muria
Tribals
Murias are another
sub caste of Gonds
tribes found in
Bastar district.They
live in the
Narayanpur and
Kondagaon Tehsils of
Bastar district.
Unlike Abhuj Marias
who live in dense
forests ,the Murias
live in Plains and
are a lot more
developed in
comparison to the
primitive Abhuj
Marias.
The economy of the
Murias is based on
agriculture and
collection of the
forest produce.Rice
growing is
common.Minor Forest
Produce is consumed
as well as sold
also. |
Halba Tribals
The Halbaas are
spread over Madhya
Pradesh ,Chhattisgarh
, Maharashtra and
Orissa.In
Chhattisgarh even
though they are
found in the
districts of Raipur
and Durg, they are
mostly found in
Bastar district.
Mainly there are
three types of
Halbas-
Chhatisgarhia,Maratia
and Bastaria.The
Halbaas of Bastar
district have
affinities with the
tribals of the
Warangal district of
Andhra Pradesh. |
