Day 01
Leave for Besham by
road via Karakoram
Highway (the old
Silk Route) 5-6 hrs
drive) Enroute visit
Taxila Museum (1 hr
drive upto Taxila).
The modern town of
Taxila is 35 km from
Islamabad. Most of
the archaeological
sites of Taxila (600
B.C -500 A.D) are
located around
Taxila Museum. For
over 1000 years
Taxila remained
famous as a centre
of learning Gandhara
art of sculpture,
architecture,
education and
Buddhism in the days
of Buddhist glory.
There are about 50
archaeological sites
scattered in a
radius of 30 km
around Taxila. Some
of the most
important sites
include
Dharamarajika Stupa
and Monastery 300
B.C- 200 A.D), Bhir
Mound (600 200 B.C),
Sirkap (200 B.C -
600 A.D), and
Jaullian Monastery
(200 - 600 A.D).
