Karachi boasts a
large number of
eating places which
offer diverse and
mouth-watering
cuisine. There are
restaurants and
cafes, and sometimes
whole districts,
offering exclusively
Pakistani cuisine,
such as Bundoo Khan
Kebabwala or the
Burnes Road
district.
To the uninitiated
all Pakistani dishes
might appear more of
the same; however,
once you have begun
to taste the
different kinds
available you will
begin to enjoy the
subtle variations
offered by different
regional dishes. You
will find that good
Pakistani food does
not necessarily mean
too much masala
(spices) or chillies,
nor too muchghee or
oil. Every dish is
cooked in a
different
combination of
spices to bring out
the best flavour of
the ingredients.
Yoghurt is used not
only in cooking but
also as a side dish
in the form of many
variations of raita
(yoghurt in a
combination of
onions, cucumber,
brinj al etc.).
There
isalargevariationofrice
dishes, bread in the
form of Chapati,
Paratha, Poori or a
variety of Nans.
Fresh Chutneys are
prepared for each
meal and there is an
array of Achar
(pickles) which will
be found
accompanying the
simplest of meals.
Fresh herbs such as
coriander and mint
are used to garnish
the dishes. Among
the most popular are
barbecued dishes
using minimum of
oil, such as Chicken
Tikka, Boti Tikka,
Seekh Kebab etc.,
which are cooked in
front of you on
glowing charcoals.
As a nation
Pakistanis have a
sweet tooth;
accordingly sticky
sweetmeats are among
the most popular
food items in
Karachi.
Pakistani cuisine is
by no means the only
kind you will come
across in Karachi.
There are a host of
restaurants offering
Chinese,
Continental,
Italian, French,
Mexican, Korean,
Japanese and Thai
dishes. Here, you
will also find the
outlets of the
omnipresent
international fast
food chains:
Kentucky Fried
Chicken, McDonald's,
Pizza Hut, Pizza
Express and TGI
Friday are carrying
out roaring
business. Local fast
food chains are also
found all over town
such as Mr. Burger
and Chips. In
addition to the
above, Karachi has
its share of ice
cream parlours,
quite a few of which
offer local
concoctions as well
(such as Falooda).
In this section you
will find the names
of more well-known
restaurants, their
speciality and price
range.
For those who enjoy
