Sheranwala Gate Guzargah

Sheranwala GateThis guzargah relates to the area in the vicinity of Sheranwala Gate. The gate was earlier known as Khizri Gate, named after Khizr Ellias, the patron saint of running water, because of its proximity to a ferry point on the river Ravi, which once flowed close to the city ramparts. The original name Khizri gave way to Sheranwala Gate (the gate of lions) when Ranjit Singh placed two stone lions (slier) here. Although the lions are no longer to be seen, the name Sheranwala continues to be used.

Sheranwala Gate

From Yakki Gate travelling along Circular Road in westerly direction, you will see Sheranwala Gate, a pointed arch gateway, dating from the British Period. Inside the gate, to its west is situated a shrine belonging to Muhammad Abdul Qayyum Hazuri. Interestingly, after you enter Sheranwala Gate Bazaar, a few metres south of the gate there is another lofty gateway which frames the access to the part of the bazaar which consists of Pakistan Cloth Market, a development of recent date, which abounds in a large variety of fabrics. Sheranwala Gate Bazaar branches towards the left (east) just before the cusped arch gateway. However, you might like to visit Shah Zaman Haveli located just south of the gateway. Turning left (east) from Shah Zaman Haveli, on Naugaran Bazaar, and left again will lead you to Sheranwala Gate Bazaar. Travelling east through Sheranwala Gate Bazaar, it is a comparatively wider roadway, with the walled city to its south.

You will be going past Aloo Wall! Haveli, and further east is located Haveli Mian Ghous. A popular belief is that the gate Sheranwala referred to the lions that once roamed the area. Perhaps it is due to the story of earlier lions that the inhabitants of Haveli Mian Ghous decided to maintain a lion as a pet, which is reported to have died just a couple of years ago. One wonders, however, how in such a congested area a lion could be retained as a pet. Even though the lion is no more, it is worth a visit to the Haveli Mian Ghous. Just before Haveli Mian Ghous, a turning to the left (north) leads you to Kucha Haji Pirand to the shrine ofSyed Baba Haji Pir Sarkar Lajpal and another Niwin Masjid.

Turning left (west) from Kucha Haji Pir will take you to the road, lining which is a garden with Circular Road beyond, arriving once again at Sheranwala Gate.
