Introduction
It is befitting that
we should start this
tour with the most
spectacular of
monuments of the
Sikhs that Lahore
possesses. A
significant cluster
of buildings, along
with the shining
golden dome is seen
near the Citadel,
with the backdrop of
the Badshahi Mosque
and the grand Mughal
Fort.
The golden dome
marks the most holy
of Sikh shrines in
Lahore around which
a whole enclosure
with diverse
activities has
sprung up. It is a
haven for those
devotees who flock
to it during the
festivals, and
otherwise too come
from long distances
from abroad to pay
their respects to
Guru Arjun. In local
parlance it is known
as Gurdawara Dera
Sahib (or Gurdawar).
From Circular Road
you will need to
turn south into the
road leading to
Badshahi Mosque. On
your right you will
find the gate to the
enclosure which
contains the
Gurdawara, Shaheed
Asthan (shrine of
Guru Arjun Mal—it is
not his samadh), the
Samadh of Ranjit
Singh (also located
next to it is Samadh
of Kharrak Singh).
If you wish also to
experience the
festivals, you
should plan your
visit during the
months of May and
June, when the melas
are held at Shaheed
Asthan and the
Samadh of Ranjit
Singh
respectively—the two
structures
representing the
"spiritual and
secular glory"
attained by
followers of the
Sikh faith.Fort Monuments
