Climate

Karachi's weather is hot and humid, although evenings are generally pleasant due to the evening breezes from the sea. For a visit to Karachi the best months are normally between October and February with daytime temperatures varying from 15° to 20°C (60° to 70°F), although you could encounter some hot days in October. There is plenty of sunshine all the year round of course and the hottest months are from April to October when the temperatures could be 35° to 45°C (100° to 115°F).

Although there is little rain—an annual average of 9.7 mm, the actual rainfall at any one time may vary, sometimes going up to 750 mm. Most rainfall is during the monsoon months of July and August, which accounts for high humidity at that time; however, it is not unusual to encounter rain during winter months as well.

To all appearances Karachi is a little barren. Although efforts are afoot to increase vegetation and trees, a lack of water hinders large-scale horticultural ventures.

Holidays

All religious holidays are based on the lunar calendar and the exact date may vary in any particular calendar year. A list of national holidays is being given; however, if you are planning to make a short business visit to Pakistan, it is advisable to check with Pakistan Embassy for any extra holidays declared by the Government.

National Holidays are Kashmir Day (5 February), Pakistan Day (23 March), Bank Holiday, for banks only(1 July), Independence Day (14 August), Defence Day of Pakistan (6 September), Birth Anniversary of the national poet, Allama Iqbal (9 November), Birthday of the Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah (25December),Bankholidayforbanksonly(31 December).

There are several religious holidays. Since these are according to the Hijra calendar, and subject to the appearance of the moon, they will be different every year.

The main religious holidays are Jumat-ul-Wida (the last Friday during Ramazan); Eid-ul-Fitr (1 Shawwal); Eid-ul-Azha (10 Zil-Hajj); Ashura (9, 10 Muharram), when mourning processions are taken out in remembrance of the martyrdom ofHazrat Imam Hussain; Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (12 Rabi-ul-Awwal), the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (May Peace be Upon Him).
