Buddha's path to meditation Visitors can learn or practice meditation and study Buddhism at several places in the Kandy area. Ask at the Buddhist Publication Society (Tel/Fax: 237283) by the lake for details abut courses. It is open from 8.30 am to 4 pm on weekdays, and to noon on Saturday. Many centres offer free courses, but they’d obviously appreciate a donation. Give what you’d normally be paying per day for food and accommodation in Sri Lanka.
Nillambe Meditation Centre (Tel: 225471), near Nillambe Bungalow junction, can be reached by bus (catch a Delthota bus via Galaha and get off at Office Junction; the trip takes about an hour). It’s a pretty spot, with great views, and is popular with foreigners. There’s a daily set schedule of meditation classes – visitors not intending to learn meditation are not encouraged. You can stay for Rs. 300 a day (including food), and although blankets are supplied you may wish to bring a sleeping bag. There’s no electricity, so bring a touch (flashlight). There’s a large library of books and a tape library here. To reach Nillambe from the Office Junction you have a steep 3km walk for a three-wheeler may be at the junction to take you for Rs. 150 through tea plantations. A taxi to/from Kandy costs Rs. 650.

Sports
Cricket Ever since Sri Lanka became World Champions in 1996, cricket has been more than just a game for Sri Lankans. While the game itself is played on every available strip of land, the exploits of the national team are followed by virtually the entire population. Sri Lanka cricket’s superstars, such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan, are heroes to almost every schoolboy in the country.
Golf It is almost 125 years since the Royal Colombo Golf Club was inaugurated. The stone was laid and a course was built on the Galle Face esplanade. The Royal Colombo is the second oldest Royal Golf Club outside the British Isles, with the Royal Calcutta Golf Club established 175 years ago identified as the oldest. During this period of time every imaginable game was played on Galle Face and the playing area was so impossibly crowded, that golf was getting choked due to unlawful encroachment.

Gastronomy
Gastronomy
A traveller setting foot on the shores of Sri Lanka will not only be enchanted by the diversity of the country's cultural heritage, but equally by its cuisine. Sri Lanka cuisine embodies the fiery heat of sun-struck beaches, the refreshing coolness of tropical rainforests and piquant flavours of regional specialties. The heart of a country's individuality is in its cuisine, which is why we connect pasta with Italy and sukiyaki with Japan.
