Things to do

Shopping

ShoppingSri Lanka is fast becoming the shopping centre of South Asia. Several new shopping Malls are opened up in the City offering international brands of men’s and women’s wear. Garments manufactured in Sri Lanka are of the highest quality which are in great demand in most countries including USA and UK. Souvenir hunters will find the Handicraft shops including the government handicraft emporium ‘Laksala’ very interesting with a large and wide array of local handicrafts on offer. All popular makes of electronic items are available in the City and in the Duty Free shops at the Airport. The duty free prices are highly competitive with other duty free shops in the region. Shopping in Fort, Pettah and along Galle Road is a fascinating experience. Tourist shops approved by the Ceylon Tourist Board are found in all tourist resorts.

Eco Tourism

Eco Tourism
Sri Lanka has tremendous potential as an eco-tourist destination. It encompasses a wide variety of scenic and ecologically important natural habitats and possesses some of the richest floral and faunal bio-diversity in the region. This remarkable diversity includes 86 species of mammals, 83 snake species, 54 different species of fish and 40 separate frog species. In terms of avifauna the diversity is even more startling with over 400 species recorded on the island including 23 endemics. It is for this reason that the country, together with India’s Western Ghats mountains is considered one of the world’s 25 bio-diversity “hot spots”.

Sports

Sports
Ever since Sri Lanka became World Champions in 1996, cricket has been more than just a game for Sri Lankans. While the game itself is played on every available strip of land, the exploits of the national team are followed by virtually the entire population. Sri Lanka cricket’s superstars, such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan, are heroes to almost every schoolboy in the country.

Night Life

Most Sri Lankan towns, except the larger cities like Colombo and Kandy, are rather low on entertainment. In large hotels, there will often be nightclubs; some hotels, clubs and other venues also offer cultural performances by traditional artistes.

Adventure

Adventure
Sri Lanka has something to offer everyone. It has the potential to become one of the great adventure destinations in the world. A rocky, mountainous core rises in three peneplains, or steps, from the centre of the island. Sheer rock faces abound in an island dissected with ridges and mountain ranges. No less than 130 rivers cascade down to the ocean, allowing plenty of scope for canoeing and white-water rafting. Anything from easy, grade one stretches, to hair-raising grade six rapids, to make even a seasonal rafter’s heart pump fast, is available. Sri Lanka’s potential for scuba diving is probably understated. In addition to the well known reefs, several others lie unexplored, off the routine diving-circuit.
